Alan wrote:

My interest is in Fraser Richardson who was Deacon of the Fleshers at the same time your ancestor Gabriel Richardson was Provost of Dumfries. It is my conjecture that Fraser and Gabriel may have been cousins. Although there are kindred, to-date however, there is no proof that our two families converge. To find my ancestors one has to probe all the family lines in order to establish relationships, which is why I am researching the early origins of yours.

Taking one generation earlier, it is certain that Fraser was the son of Robert the baker. Although we have a few candidates in mind for Robert’s parentage there is no certain proof which one of them was Robert’s.

Similarly, it is certain that the father of Gabriel was John of Cleughfoot. Robert Kemp in his Copwick site asserts that Mary Hendry was Gabriel’s mother, but I can find no proof for this. Certainly, GROS in its Scotlandspeople site has a John Richardson, already married to Mary, sitting on the naughty seat in 1750 for his fornication before their marriage but I have not yet found a certain link between this wayward John and Gabriel’s father to justify this assumption. It is certain, by examining the Baptismal record that Gabriel’s (b1758) siblings are: Thomas b1753, William b1755, Catharine b1764, Archibald b1767, John b1769, Janet b 1772 and Mary b1775. There may have been more, and Gabriel’s Will doesn’t mention all of these. Relating Mary’s pregnancy of 1750 there is no child subsequently baptised in Kirkpatrick-Juxta that is an easy fit. There is a gap of 3 years. Janet baptised in 1851 in Dumfries may fill this gap but there is no evidence for this. Their firstborn may have been sadly still born. From the current available records it is difficult to establish who was John’s father. Again we have candidates in mind but no certain proof. “Probably” comes all too often to mind.

According to the eulogy in the Churchyard, Gabriel “was born in humble circumstances on the lands of Kellobank, once the property of his ancestors.” Property here means leaseholder or tenant. Kellobank was a large estate in Kirkpatrick-Juxta which by 1820 had been divided and sold by its owners the Hope-Johnstones. The northern half went to William Younger to enlarge his Craigielands Estate and the southern portion, which included Cleughfoot, went to The Duke of Buccleuch. The name Cleughfoot is interesting. A “CLEUCH” according to the scots dictionary is a small ravine or gully. A burn running in its gully can be clearly seen running down the hillside opposite from the Kirkpatrick-Juxta churchyard. The Ordnance Survey in 1857 shows this burn in its ravine with a farmhouse located at the bottom of the hill. The farmhouse is spelt “CLEUCHFOOT” with a “C”; as the scots dictionary. All the Richardson baptismal records have the spelling “CLEUGHFOOT” spelt with a “G”; as does the 1804 valuations. The current postal address is: Cleughfoot House, Beattock, MOFFAT, DG10 9RF. So the historic local spelling of Cleughfoot with a “G” has had it for more than 200 years and the Ordnance Survey is wrong. Your web page on the Richardson origins “Richardson from Dumfriesshire” has badly misspelt the farm name. Secondly, John had more than two sons, so it should read, “… John Richardson had two notable sons.”

Two candidate aunts: Elizabeth S M RICHARDSON and Mary Ann PACEY, wife of his uncle Thomas W BOOTH. Both had sons by name of Thomas. In his letter of 1854 his reference to Thomas was clearly Thomas BOOTH (c), to whom he was probably close and therefore AJRV concludes this likely Mary Ann PACEY.
