At age ca. 15 was apprenticed for seven years to blacksmiths in Cerne Abbas, and after two years employed by his brother John in Bockhamton as blacksmith for £10 per year plus diet and lodgings.882
On 7th August 1784 he was certified as living in Stinsford together with his wife Elizabeth and children William, Mary and Jane880
