Origins of George VOSS (d) and relationship to Capt. Edward VOSS (c) revisited

Believe resolved: they were brothers

Alison Smith proposed that my GGGrandfather George VOSS (d) was the George VOSS baptised in West Knighton 4th August 1811.  If this were correct, it would make him and Capt. Edward VOSS (c) fourth cousins through Edward’s maternal line.  I know that Capt. Edward’s daughter Rosa was in touch with my Grandfather Edward George VOSS, for she signed his visitor’s book on 22 August 1910.   They would have been fifth cousins, once removed (5C1R).  Edward’s grand daughter Margaret Rosa Summers VOSS bequeathed relics of Capt. Voss to my father, who would have been 6C1R.  It strains credibility that the family bonds stretched that far and that Rosa had no closer Voss relative to bestow.  See my earlier post on this relationship. Who was John VOSS (d) who married Elizabeth MAUNDERS 1765 in Wyke Regis?

The parents of Capt. Edward VOSS (c) were John VOSS (m) & Susannah “Sarah” VOSS (d).  I have a Voss connection back to the Vosses of Winterbourne Came through his mother, but his paternal Voss line only to his grandfather John VOSS (d).  I need to trace this back further, and so am looking for the baptism on John VOSS (d). Where was marriage of Thomas VOSS (z) & Jane ca. 1720 and baptism of George VOSS (j) ca. 1720

Thomas VOSS (z) and his wife Jane baptised 8-9 children in Winterbourne Came, the first recorded as John in March 1748.  Both Thomas and Jane were later buried there.  Thomas’ father is also buried there.

About Thomas’ wife Jane we know nothing.  I have no marriage record, so do not know here maiden name, nor where she came from.  I imagine the marriage took place in her home parish. Continue reading Where was marriage of Thomas VOSS (z) & Jane ca. 1720 and baptism of George VOSS (j) ca. 1720

Who was Martha VOSS (b) buried in Winterborne Came, Dorset 8th March 1784?

There is widespread  recording in genealogical records that the above Martha VOSS (b) was the wife of Robert LUCAS (a).  These research records probably all have their origin in the same source – the Family Chronicle of George du Toit Voss, who did extensive research into the Vosses of Dorset but who died in 1980.

Various researchers have been puzzled as to why Martha was buried under her maiden name if she had married Robert Lucas. Continue reading Who was Martha VOSS (b) buried in Winterborne Came, Dorset 8th March 1784?

These pages and blog have just moved in!

Previously, my Antipole genealogy pages were hosted on Easyspace and a separate Antipole Genealogy Research Blog was hosted on MobileMe.  Both were managed by iWeb.  Pending the closure of MobileMe in June 2012, both have been consolidated onto a single new site using WordPress.  The URL is unchanged at genealogy.antipole.co.uk but some of the pages within the site have moved around.
